Ce polym\u00e8re hygroscopique d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie abordable est constitu\u00e9 de trois monom\u00e8res\u00a0: l&rsquo;acrylonitrile qui apporte une r\u00e9sistance chimique, le butadi\u00e8ne qui apporte une r\u00e9sistance aux chocs et le styr\u00e8ne qui offre de la rigidit\u00e9 et de l&rsquo;aptitude \u00e0 la transformation. Il est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement compos\u00e9 d&rsquo;environ la moiti\u00e9 de styr\u00e8ne, le reste \u00e9tant divis\u00e9 entre l&rsquo;acrylonitrile et le butadi\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>La d\u00e9couverte de l&rsquo;ABS r\u00e9sulte de la volont\u00e9 d&rsquo;am\u00e9liorer le caoutchouc synth\u00e9tique styr\u00e8ne-butadi\u00e8ne (SBR). L&rsquo;ABS a \u00e9t\u00e9 brevet\u00e9 en 1948 et introduit sur les march\u00e9s commerciaux en 1954. Reconnu pour sa solidit\u00e9 et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre moul\u00e9 dans une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de formes, ce thermoplastique a largement \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1960 pour la fabrication de jouets, d\u2019appareils m\u00e9nagers, de pi\u00e8ces automobiles, de bo\u00eetiers \u00e9lectroniques et d\u2019articles de sport.
