\u00e0 partir du monom\u00e8re styr\u00e8ne. Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un thermoplastique, ce qui signifie qu&rsquo;il peut \u00eatre fondu et remodel\u00e9 plusieurs fois sans perdre ses propri\u00e9t\u00e9s. Le polystyr\u00e8ne (PS) profite d\u2019une l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9e, mais est aussi plut\u00f4t fragile. Il peut \u00eatre produit selon deux m\u00e9thodes, soit par polym\u00e9risation en suspension, soit par polym\u00e9risation en solution. Les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s du polystyr\u00e8ne peuvent aussi \u00eatre modifi\u00e9es par l&rsquo;ajout d&rsquo;autres mat\u00e9riaux, tels que des pigments, des charges ou d&rsquo;autres polym\u00e8res. Ces propri\u00e9t\u00e9s peuvent \u00e9galement \u00eatre modifi\u00e9es en ajoutant d&rsquo;autres produits chimiques au polym\u00e8re. Par exemple, le polystyr\u00e8ne peut devenir plus rigide par l&rsquo;ajout d&rsquo;une petite quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;un produit chimique appel\u00e9 agent de r\u00e9ticulation. Le polystyr\u00e8ne est largement utilis\u00e9 dans l&#8217;emballage et l&rsquo;isolation, en raison de ses bonnes propri\u00e9t\u00e9s d&rsquo;isolation, de son faible co\u00fbt et de sa facilit\u00e9 de fabrication. Cependant, le polystyr\u00e8ne n&rsquo;est pas biod\u00e9gradable et peut persister dans l&rsquo;environnement pendant des centaines d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, ce qui constitue l&rsquo;une des principales pr\u00e9occupations concernant son impact environnemental.<\/p>\n<p>Le polystyr\u00e8ne (PS) a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert en 1839, mais ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle que les scientifiques ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 comprendre le processus de polym\u00e9risation \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine du polystyr\u00e8ne. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le polystyr\u00e8ne a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 pour fabriquer divers produits, y compris des isolants pour les \u00e9quipements \u00e9lectriques et des mat\u00e9riaux d&#8217;emballage pour les denr\u00e9es alimentaires et d&rsquo;autres biens. L&rsquo;une des utilisations les plus connues du polystyr\u00e8ne est la fabrication de gobelets en mousse et de r\u00e9cipients alimentaires jetables.
